Joint Secretary Naga National Council
I am hereby clarifying on the content of the article titled ‘Naga Movement in Manipur: Change & Continuity’ by Dr. Rimmei Longmei, Asst. Professor & HOD, Department of Political Science which appeared in The Morung Express on July 25. The para 7 of his article stated that, “According to UNC, its predecessor-Naga National League (NNL) Manipur Naga Council (MNC) and Naga Integration Council (NIC) supported the Naga National Council (NNC) movement which aimed at unity and solidarity of all Nagas including those Nagas of un-administered areas." And the Para 8 stated, "When the Second Indo-Naga Cease-fire came into effect on 1st August, 1997..." Regarding the para 7, the above organisations whether support NNC or not can be easily understood by the readers from the records, as I am extracting from the book of A.Z. Phizo Birth Centenary 1904-2004, "A portrait of A.Z. Phizo," Para 16..."By and large, he travelled widely mostly alone but sometimes accompanied by Naga representatives to consult with the leaders of Assam, Garos, Khasis, Lushais and others on their political views for the future. He found neighbouring leaders very friendly but felt deeply apprehensive to go alone as an independent country. Manipur, a princely state was different but he invited the Tangkhul Nagas led by Suisa and Mao Nagas led by Daiho, to join the motherland. But they preferred to stay with Manipur." But there was no second Indo-Naga Ceasefire as stated in para 8 in the history of the Nagas except the International Ceasefire Agreement which was officially signed and effected on 6th September, 1964 between the two National Governments, viz; the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) and the Government of India (G01) through the initiative of the Peace Mission members. The members are: Jayaprakash Narayan, B.P. Chaliha and Rev. Michael Scott. There is only one mandated political institution of the Naga Nation, that is the Naga National Council (NNC) and only one established Government of the Naga Nation, that is the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) which has the authority to govern Nagaland. Lately from 1957, some south Naga volunteers joined the Naga National Council (NNC) and the Federal Government of Nagaland. The Indo-Naga Ceasefire of 1964 covered all the south Naga inhabited areas (Shepoumaramth, Zeliangrong, Tangkhul and AMAMMCHT). This fact has evidently proved that the Government of India (G0I) has already recognised all south Naga inhabited areas as the land of the Nagas. Hence no individuals or groups can senselessly demand from India to integrate the Naga country in the so-called Nagalim as all the Nagas are one family under the banner of the mandated Naga national Council (NNC). The history of the Nagas is originally very clear and no one can twist nor make confused at any cost.
