Kohima, August 21 (MExN): The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has called upon the state government to urgently implement a Landlord–Tenant Registration System in Nagaland, echoing a similar demand made recently by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).
The CNCCI, in a statement issued by its Chairman, Dr. Khekugha Muru, and General Secretary, Avi Chase, said that in the absence of such a system, “anti-social and unscrupulous individuals, posing as businessmen, have taken advantage.”
It said many have rented residential properties under false pretenses and engaged in “illegal and unethical activities, thereby tarnishing the image of the business community at large.”
The organisation further highlighted that “there have been multiple instances where individuals have taken shops and commercial premises on rent, claiming to establish genuine businesses. After gaining the trust of consumers, they abscond with large sums of money collected as advance payments for goods and services.” According to the statement, “these fraudulent acts have, in some cases, involved losses running into multiple crores.”
The CNCCI noted that bringing the culprits to justice has proven difficult. “Victims are often left without proper documentation, proof of identity, or details of the fraudsters. This lack of information makes it extremely challenging for victims to even lodge formal complaints with the authorities,” it said.
The body cautioned that such repeated incidents “not only damage the credibility of Nagaland’s business community but also cause irreparable financial and emotional harm to innocent citizens.”
“The CNCCI therefore urges the State Government to immediately implement a Landlord–Tenant Registration System across Nagaland to safeguard the interests of both the public and the genuine business community,” the statement added.
