Dimapur, May 19 (MExN): The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has asked the Municipal Department how it allows the Municipal Councils to levy/collect taxes at interstate check gates on goods laden trucks according to the numbers of tyres the truck has.
A press release from CNCCI Chairperson, Dr Khekugha Muru and General Secretary, Dr Seyievilie Mor today said that “this shameful system is found only in Nagaland.”
It called for a halt to all such collections “as there is no logic or reason” to levy entry/toll tax when all requisite taxes have been paid by transporters during registration and renewal of truck licence; and payment of trade licence and sanitation tax has been made to operate a transport agency.
The CNCCI said that this has been a long pending demand made by the business community to the government time and again, since most of these check gates exist without any relevance or validity but its sole purpose being collecting taxes and meanwhile “fleecing the hard-earned money of the business community and transporters.”
The CNCCI said that “while one of the main reasons for the GST regime is to make check gates free and make movements of good hassle free across India, in Nagaland contrary to the objective over the years check gates in Nagaland has been mushrooming.”
Meanwhile, it welcomed the Nagaland Home Department's order to ban all the government and private check gates across Nagaland. It asked the government to implement the order with full commitment and produce results on the ground.
