Conference held on quality enhancement in higher edu

Kohima, June 14 (DIPR): A Principals Conference on quality enhancement in higher education was held at Hotel Japfu, Kohima on June 14, organized by Department of Higher Education, Nagaland and co-sponsored by NAAC.  Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, Lumami, Prof. Konwar, who graced the conference as the chief guest said that the Government and the department in particular are taking every meaningful steps to impart quality education to the students and added that the immediate need of higher education is to make the person knowledgeable and to give the wisdom to serve, earn and survive. 

Emphasizing on improvement of quality education, Prof. Konwar pointed out the importance of the student’s feed backs and felt that the syllabus should be prepared basing on the feedbacks and should cover the syllabus within the semester. He said that teachers should be sent for short term training courses to acquire better quality education and also organize various training courses for the students in the colleges. He also shared the need to constitute a mechanism to give best teacher award and the best student’s award to encourage them. 

He encouraged the gathering to have interaction with the students and to involve them in policy making to ensure all round development. Mentioning the need to provide computer with internet facilities, library, book lending facilities for nominal deposit, proper laboratories, hostels and games & sports facilities, he stressed on the need for creating completely ragging free atmosphere in the institutions. Pointing out the need to attract the students in Science stream and to find out the reason why the number of students is declining in science subject, not only in the State but in the whole country, he said that it can be a good job opportunity also as 40% of the Science teachers are lying vacant.

Commissioner & Secretary, Higher Education, Nagaland F.P. Solo who also addressed the gathering said that, to measure quality education is not an easy task but the bottom line, what matters is what kind of life the student live in later years after completing their studies. He also suggested the need for pre-examination center under Nagaland University which would be very useful to the students. Commissioner also pointed out the need to separate class 11 & 12 from colleges as it is the look out of the school, stating that it may dilute the quality of teachers because these are two different levels which need different technologies and teachers.

In the first session, I. Niketu Iralu who spoke on the topic “Value Added Education” challenged all the participants and teachers to become the role models and to guide the society. During the II session Dr. R.K.Behera spoke on the topic NAAC, “New Methology” & Promoting the use of IT technology.
