Dimapur, March 19 (MExN): The role of students in conservation of biodiversity was highlighted during a seminar Vidhya Bhawan Higher Secondary School, Dimapur on March 18. The seminar titled ‘Biodiversity and Its Conservation’ was conducted by the Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB).
According to a press release from the school’s Principal, NSBB Chairperson Satya Prakash Tripathi delivered the keynote address where he underscored the importance of conservation of nature and the important roles that students can play in conservation.
Special invitee Dr Prabhat Kumar who is the Director of Nagaland Zoological Park stated that the rich wildlife can only be saved if everyone understands their value and said that conservation of wildlife is a fundamental duty of each and every individual, the release stated.
As per the release, resource person Elithung Odyuo, Assistant Conservator of Forest, elaborated on the various types of biodiversity, its significance and the need to conserve them, while highlighting some of the adverse effects caused by the loss of biodiversity. He has also highlighted on the rich biodiversity of Nagaland and also enlightened the students with some of the World Records from Nagaland. He also explained the role of students in conservation of biodiversity encouraged the students to use eco-friendly products and also create awareness on the important values of biodiversity.
Meanwhile, Forest Ranger Savinuo Kikhi and the other officials carried out documentation of important resources and also led a plantation drive with the Eco Club members of the school. Around 50 students participated in these activities, the release stated.
The NSBB also donated six sets of computers with printer and a digital camera to the school under the project ‘Developing Infrastructure in Schools for Promoting Biodiversity Conservation funded by NEC,’ during the programme which was attended by all ranks and files from the forest department and NSBB, as well as the teachers and students of the school, the release stated.
Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Ruth and the vote of thanks by the Principal of the school VK Shah.
