NVCO kicks off consumer rights campaign
Kohima, March 2 (MExN): The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation(NVCO) together with the final year students of Kohima Law College(KLC) conducted a special session on raising awareness to reduce plastic pollution and engage consumers in adopting more sustainable practices.
The NVCO also launched its two week celebration of World Consumer Rights Day on the theme ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution’ which will culminate on March 15, a press release from the NVCO Press and Media Cell informed.
According to the release, NVCO President Kezhokhoto Savi presented a talk on the theme and underscored the importance of sustainable plastic use. Savi said that plastic is a highly useful material in our daily lives, but unsustainable consumption and production of plastics, especially single-use plastic, have begun to make negative impacts in the ecosystems. This, he said, has caused negative environment consequences, including pollution of the local and international environment, along with threats to human health.
Stating that tackling plastic pollution is a global challenge which requires coordinated international solutions, he also highlighted various studies on how plastics will affect the world in the future.
Savi further stated that every citizen of the state can play a critical role in tackling the issue and promote sustainable consumption and production of plastics. Some of the ways to achieve this, he said, included using reusable bags when shopping, using refillable drinking bottles, etc. He also observed that there was an increase in the use of single-use plastic during the pandemic and noted that systematic changes are required at all levels beginning from the governments, business and standard setters in order to make sustainable consumption of plastics an easy choice for consumers.
The release further stated that the team would be creating awareness on different levels covering topics such as; consumer rights, environment protection, human rights, state consumer helpline with toll free number 1800-345-3701, tackling plastic pollution, food safety, food security, etc. It also said that the team would give first priority to youth departments in churches, as the role of the youth is vital.
