The Nagaland Contractors & Suppliers’ Union today began its first phase of agitations in the form of a poster and banner campaign throughout the State pressing for the release of pending bills.

Speaking to newsmen, NCSU President Pele Khezhie and General Secretary John Kath said the union has rejected the state cabinet decision with regard to its pending bills and demanded the revocation of the decision by serving a 20-day deadline to release the pending bills. Following expiry of the deadline yesterday, the NCSU has been compelled to resort to its first agitation in the form of poster and banner campaign to seek justice, the NCSU leaders said.

In the state capital Kohima, NCSU members and volunteers were seen pasting and putting up posters on walls throughout the town and even in colonies. Some of the posters read: ‘Ministers are to serve community, not dominate them’, ‘Stop fooling the poor public’, ‘No payment no government’, and ‘We are not criminals, we are demanding what is ours’.

The NCSU leaders admitted that they did not wish to resort to agitation but was compelled to do so as the government had failed to give assurance in written. They also informed that the phase-wise agitation will continue till their demands are fulfilled.

Expressing surprise at the decision taken by the cabinet regarding the pending bills of its members under PWD (Roads & Bridges) and Housing & PHED, the NCSU expressed its regrets for the inconvenience caused to the public as a result of its agitation while also appealing to the public and NGOs to extend support to the union.

The union is demanding release of pending bills amounting to over Rs.35 crore from the state government under PWD (R & B), Housing & PHED.
