KOHIMA, AUGUST 7 (MExN): In another despicable act committed by guardians of the law, police personnel under D’Coy, DEF Kohima, is said to have raped a minor girl on Sunday night. According to a press release from the Khiamniugan Union Kohima (KUK), the incident occurred when the victim, a Khiamniungan girl of class IV, was on her way home after helping her foster parents with the house work. The accused, Raphungoi Chakhesang, son of Benyi of Pfutsero caught her at around 6:00 pm near Popular Bakery, Officers Hill.
It was also stated that the alleged rapist who was in full police uniform took her around with threats to kill her if she screamed and later took her to his office duty room at Press and Information Bureau office. The release stated that the minor was raped twice on the floor of the office.
It was also revealed that the helpless victim, to save her life, had jumped down a balcony which was almost 15 feet high and landed on the tin roof of a house. Thereafter, the victim is said to have related the incident to the owner of the building after which the latter informed the police.
In this connection, the KUK has condemned the incident in the strongest terms expressing resentment for the act meted out on the innocent minor by the accused in full uniform. The union has appealed to the authority to award befitting punishment to the culprit failing which, it cautioned that the union would be compelled to take an own course of action, as deemed fit and for which the union would not be held responsible. The KUK also appealed to civil society and all right-thinking citizens to condemn the barbaric and inhuman act.
