YOU COULD cut the tension with a knife! The Dimapur Municipal Council tussle took on a new chapter today as the Gauhati High Court passed an order that today’s scheduled election will not be recognized even if the meeting earlier called by Dimapur Deputy Commissioner KN Ngullie takes place.
To quote the court order, “It is, in the interest of justice, though the meeting at Dimapur Municipal Council may be held as scheduled on 25-03-2006 to elect the Chairman for the said Council, the result of the election shall not be acted upon and no Gazette notification shall be issued in this regard, without leave of this Court.”
The order comes into effect after taking into consideration the revival of an earlier stalled court case where a woman named Khetoli, fighting for a berth into the DMC as a nominee, had filed a case. The constitution states that a civic body should include a woman nominee.
Acknowledging receipt of the court order, Ngullie said the meeting would be conducted as scheduled. Former DMC Chairperson Y Vikheho Awomi, against whom a no-confidence motion was earlier passed said, “No one is above the law.”
He earlier said he was not aware of the court’s order. However, it was later confirmed that he had received a copy of the order at a later hour.
Tovihoto Ayemi, the contender earlier tipped to be the next DMC chairperson after the proposed ouster of Vikheho, while expressing confidence said that even though the court had said no result on the election would be acted upon, the elections would be conducted.
