Maligaon, August 23 (MExN): The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Sumeet Singhal, has approved the commencement of freight and passenger train operations on the newly constructed 16.725 km broad-gauge line between Bhairabi and Hortoki. This decision follows a successful inspection and speed trial completed at the end of July 2024.
The new railway line, part of the larger 51.38 km Bhairabi-Sairang project, is authorized for a maximum speed of 75 km/h. The line features 20 major and 27 minor bridges, along with 13 tunnels. It includes three Road Over Bridges and one Road Under Bridge, and is designed for speeds up to 100 km/h on the main line and 30 km/h on loop lines.
Notably, the line has been constructed in seismic zone V, with an average annual rainfall of 2112.823 mm. The section incorporates ballast-less tracks on bridges 40 and 42, and is equipped with electronic interlocking and a MACL signal system. Communication between stations will be supported by an OFC system and 25watt VHF radios. The Hortoki Railway Station has been upgraded with a new Foot Over Bridge (FOB), waiting hall, second-class waiting room, and separate restrooms for ladies and gents.
The Bhairabi-Sairang project includes 12853 meters of tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 89 minor bridges. The construction of Pier P-4 of bridge 196, the tallest in the project at 104 meters, has been completed. This pier is 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar. The project will feature four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.
Upon completion, the Bhairabi-Sairang line is expected to enhance connectivity for Mizoram, support local industries, and boost tourism. It will reduce transportation costs and travel time between Mizoram’s capital and Assam, providing better access across the country and ensuring a steady supply of essential goods to the region.
