Mon, January 27 (DIPR): In commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Election Commission of India, the First National Voters’ Day was celebrated with the slogan “Greater Participation for a Stronger Democracy” at Mon on January 25 at DC’s conference hall, Mon with Deputy Commissioner, Mon Dinesh Kumar, IAS as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest said that the purpose of organizing the event is to promote democratic rights of the citizen and to create awareness about the legal procedure of right to exercise their franchise. Pointing out that illegal practices such as booth capturing, an individual casting vote for the entire voters in the village or proxy votes, money power, muscle power, etc have been reported from various quarters in the state in the past, the DC therefore called upon the Government officers, NGOs, representatives from political parties and the gathering to do away with such illegal practices and create awareness to the public about the democratic rights of ‘Right to Vote to elect their representative’
Earlier, Assistant Election Officer (AEO), Mon, Joy Bell in his keynote address said that for the last 60 years the Election Commission of India has done a tremendous job as independent body and added that it is cerebrated to create awareness to the mass and to conduct fair and peaceful election, and exercise their franchise freely in a peaceful atmosphere through democratic rights.
M. Honlei, also spoke on behalf of the newly enrolled voters. The highlights of the programme were felicitation of newly enrolled voters and undertaking of pledge by the people present. Altogether 130 people attended the programme. The programme was chaired by ADC, Mon Sarah R. Ritse who also proposed the welcome address and vote of thanks.
