DCCI against ‘forceful’ fund or donation drives

Dimapur, January 29 (MExN): Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) on Saturday drew attention to what it termed as “extreme harassment” faced by the business community due to forceful fund or donation drives carried out by multiple unions and organisations.

In a press release on Sunday, DCCI President Akashe Zhimomi said that despite the organisation’s appeal earlier in the month, “all shops and business houses in the commercial hub are flooded with demand/request by 40-50 unions and organisations of all hues and types to buy their calendars, souvenirs etc., or to contribute towards their silver jubilee, golden jubilee or conferences.”

Lamenting that such “illegal fund drives continue unabated,” the DCCI said that the business community has never shied away when it comes to giving their due contribution towards genuine causes and events. It also clarified that the DDCI does not have any issues with the way unions and organisations wish to celebrate their jubilees or conferences but however, suggested that the fund raising be done through “honest, hard work and acceptable means rather than resort to unethical fund/donation drives, which amounts to daylight robbery.”

Further, it pointed out that January and February are the leanest months in terms financial health for the business community and most citizens. “In this lean season, the business community cannot afford to contribute to whichever union or organisation that comes knocking at our shops,” it said, while asserting that the community would not entertain any such fund or donation drives without the permission from the district administration and knowledge and approval of DCCI.
