DIMAPUR: Detailed information relating to the tragic bus mishap near Longleng killing 8 people on August 4, Thursday evening continue to pour in with both the State government and civil group in the region responding in the immediate aftermath of the accident. It was learnt that the ill fated NST bus bearing the license plate number NL-11-1270 was coming from Dimapur to Longleng when it fell into a deep gorge just about 50 feet away from Longleng town entry point junction. The accident occurred at around 5 pm.
As reported 8 people died on the spot, while 1 person died on the way to hospital. Among the deaths, there were 3 females and 6 males. The body of one non-local Muslim whose body was claimed by relatives from Dimapur was handed over to the Muslim community, Longleng.
More than 17 people were injured, out of which 5 of them are serious. Some of the injured have been sent to Jorhat and Mokokchung after getting first aid in the Community Health Centre, Longleng.
A press communiqué issued by Longleng Town Council President on behalf of Longleng residents expressed gratefulness to the various individuals and group. Special mention was made for Deputy Commissioner, Longleng Z.Thele for making effort to mobilize relief teams. The D.C also gave monetary assistance to the injured and to family members of the deceased. The D.C and his sub-ordinates had physically visited all the victims.
The town council also expressed gratitude to Major K.S.Rathore and his team of 30 Assam Rifles who helped in recovering the dead bodies and those injured. They also provided medicines and generators for lighting the hospital. As there was a shortage of fuel in the town, the Assam Rifles also donated fuel to some of the vehicles used during the relief operation. The Assam Rifles also helped in transporting the dead bodies from Longleng to Shemnyuching village, which is about 150 KMs away as three of those dead hailed from this village.
The Indian Red Cross society (IRCS), Mokokchung sent two ambulances along with their team, which helped in transferring the seriously injured in the nearby hospitals.
The SP Longleng also provided fuel and rendered the services of his men to help in the relief operation.
The Longleng Town Council members, VGs, Dobashis and the Gaonboras also rendered assistance in recovering the victims and in tracing the missing people.
The Deputy General Manager, NST Mokokchung also reached the spot and met the victims and their relatives.
Advisor, DUDA M.Chenlom Phom also expressed shock and conveyed his solidarity with the family members of the deaths and victims. He donated Rs.25,000/- as relief for the death and injured.
MLA H.Nyemli Phom also consoled the victims and donated Rs.25,000/- as relief for the death and injured.
Minister Transport & Communication Imtilemba Sangtam also reached Longleng to share the sorrow of the bereaved families and injured.
The Executive Secretary of the Phom Baptist Christian Association C.Amop Noklang and his co-workers, the SDMO Dr.K.T.Lotha and his staff also rendered maximum services during and after the relief operation. The people from Medical Colony, Longleng rendered fast service at the spot of the accident.
The Longleng Town Council Chairperson H.Leisha meanwhile expressed heartfelt gratitude to one and all who rendered their services through various means during the dark hour of tragedy in the town.
