New Delhi, September 8 (IANS) Minister of State and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra on Tuesday met the family of Manipuri singer Chongtham Vikram Singh killed by some miscreants in south east Delhi and expressed grief over the incident.
He said that all of Delhi stands with the bereaved family of the 54-year-old musician.
Malhotra said that he had spoken with senior police authorities and expressed confidence that investigators, who have already arrested all the accused, will present chargesheet in trial court at the earliest.
Delhi BJP President added that the killing of the Manipur singer is a horrifying incident but has no racist angle.
"I request opposition parties to not to indulge in dirty politics and trying to give it a racist colour," he said.
He assured the victim's family that the Delhi government, on its part, will recommend speedy trial in a Special Court.
A Manipuri musician died after a group of delivery workers and an eatery's staff allegedly assaulted him when he objected to their shouting and consuming alcohol outside his apartment in Kilokari village near Ashram in the early hours of Monday, officials said.
The police have arrested seven men and apprehended a juvenile in connection with the case.
The Sunlight Colony Police Station received a PCR call regarding the assault on Vikram Singh, a native of Manipur who had been living in Kilokari village for several years.
A preliminary enquiry revealed that Singh had objected to a group of men allegedly creating nuisance outside his residence.
Singh sustained injuries after the men allegedly assaulted him, police said.
Singh's son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital but he succumbed to his injuries, according to officials.
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault and Singh's death.
The North East Students Society, Delhi University (NESSDU), condoled Singh's death and described him as a 'respected Manipuri musician' who had built his life in Delhi around music for the last 20 years.
