Nagaland Minister for Planning & Co-ordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu today informed that the State Government has worked out a concept to ease traffic congestion in Kohima and Dimapur through the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre.

“We cannot continue to go like this. We have to do something to ease traffic congestion in Kohima and Dimapur,” the Minister said while releasing a book on ‘Geospatial Water Resource Map of Nagaland’ in Kohima on August 21.

He said the present traffic congestion in Kohima and Dimapur city has adversely impacted the quality of life and economic productivity; causing late arrival for offices, meetings, examination centres, appointments and also obstructing transportation of sick persons to hospitals.

“These are very serious matter,” Kronu said and called for urgent and collective efforts to solve the traffic congestion.
Kronu informed that the State Government will take up the matter with the Government of India for funding the related projects like circular roads, ring roads, bypass roads etc.

Later, officials of Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre also made a presentation on the concept of the proposed development plans such as construction of flyovers, bridges, multipurpose parking lot complex, bypass and arterial roads for easing the traffic congestion in Kohima and Dimapur towns.

New projects to ease traffic
Nagaland GIS and Remote Sensing Centre Project Director, Er Mhathung Kithan informed that the proposed development plans are in the form of single lane flyover at PR Hill Junction and High School Junction; multi-purpose parking lot complex at various locations along the road corridor of Kohima city; and development of multipurpose parking complexes at different colonies/ wards of Kohima town.

Also suggested is road expansion and development of a ring road at High School Junction, PR Hill Junction, TCP Gate junction, and Choto Bosti Junction. There are also plans for the development of a doubled floored multi-purpose complex cum stadium at Kohima Local Ground.

The Project Director informed that the proposed multi-purpose complex will greatly ease the vehicle parking space problem in the State capital and also serve as an alternate space for local/street vendors, thus encouraging clean and healthier streets within Kohima.

For Dimapur, the need for construction of more bridges has been highlighted.
