Dimapur, July 18 (MExN): Stating to act against the deepening scourge of rampant extortion in Dimapur, the police administration of Dimapur have arrested a number of underground activists of “NSCN belonging to the Unification camp” and an NNC group for extortion, in separate incidents. This was stated in a press note issued by the Additional Superintendent of Police Dimapur. The arrest of the underground activists comes in the backdrop of extortion taking centre stage in Dimapur, police said, where rampant extortion and intimidation by several underground factions and illegal organizations are on.
Dimapur police arrested two cadres of “NSCN belonging to the Unification camp” as confessed by the arrested accused, on July 18 from the Ghorapatti area, a press release from the police said today. The two cadres were stopping trucks entering Nagaland after crossing the Newfield Check gate and from them, collecting so-called “taxes” it was informed.
The arrested NSCN cadres have been identified as “ss sectional officer” Elobemo Jami, son of Sanglamo of Chuti village and one “ss raja peyu” Chemthungo, son of Yantso of Yampang village, both under Wokha. Another cadre managed to escape and is absconding, police said. They were stopping the transport trucks coming from Assam and demanding “taxes” through threats and intimidation, police said.
On searching the apprehended cadres, police recovered cash amounting to Rs 4,000, extorted from the trucks. The cadres were arrested and a case registered against them.
In another incident, Dimapur police personnel arrested a cadre of one of the NNC groups, from around the City Tower in Dimapur on July 18. He was identified as one “ss under secretary of NNC” Akato, son of a Viyeto of Hakizhe village. He was collecting illegal “tax” from businesspersons between Plaza Restaurant to City Tower, police said. Extortion slips of NNC with cash of Rs 6, 550 were recovered from his possession.
Preliminary investigation revealed that another person one Akaba Sangtam alias Midas, an “ss finance secretary” of NNC residing in Dimapur’s Burma camp was provided to the arrested cadre. Police has registered a case of extortion against him as well, the police informed.
