Dimapur, July 6 (MExN): Increasingly burdened by unabated extortion, Dimapur civil society have met and discussed the so-called “taxation”, which has reduced both the common public members and the business community a suffering wreck. The Dimapur community has decided to form a committee to highlight the issue to the government, for strong remedial steps.
The Dimapur community is unanimous that government steps up efforts in administration and enforcement of law.
A public meeting was held on July 6 in Chakhesang Colony in Dimapur where altogether 123 leaders from all major Dimapur-based civil and business organizations, tribal ‘hohos’, legislators, women organizations, GBs, village chairmen and leaders of various non-Naga communities attended. The meeting specifically deliberated upon the rampant taxation and extortion menace in Dimapur and the June 30 violence in Dimapur and Intangki National park, a note form the Naga Council of Dimapur informed today.
On the Intangki issue, the organizations opined that the matter is beyond the purview of a civil organization but a subject matter of the state government.
Dimapur’s community discussed at length the problems and harassment faced by all and sundry under the weight of unauthorized “taxation” and the insecurity prevailing in the city, which has seriously affected the trust and confidence of business community and the public alike.
The meeting acknowledged the fact that the “taxation,” both by unauthorized elements as well as ‘authorized agencies’, has immensely burdened the public.
The illegal activity needs to be addressed firmly and appropriately, the organizations agreed in the meeting.
“A special committee, it was largely felt, must be constituted to bring out all facts pertaining to this in order to initiate corrective measures. The house recorded the pathetic voice of the people narrating untold miseries faced especially by the poorest rural class due to taxation menace in the course of seeking a humble economic sustenance in urban Dimapur,” the Naga Council informed.
It was been unanimously decided that a special public committee shall be constituted comprising members from various frontal organizations, tribal and non-tribal hohos/communities, business organizations, legal fraternity and senior citizens. “The committee shall thoroughly look into the menace of unauthorized taxation issues/price rise, etc and submit views and opinion to the government for remedial measures,” the council informed, detailing the decisions.
On the Intangki incident, the house opined that the matter is beyond the purview of civil organizations but a subject matter of the state Government. “The House however, voted to appeal to all concerned to uphold peace and allow the government to exercise its wisdom to deliver justice while assuring all assistance towards restoration of peace,” the resolution stated.
