Dimapur, June 14 (MExN): The Dimapur Sümi Council (DSC) has expressed shock and strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault of two minor girls in separate incidents in Dimapur, calling for a fast-track trial and stringent punishment for the accused.
In a statement, the council described the incidents as heinous crimes against vulnerable children and said such acts have no place in a civilised society. It also appreciated the Nagaland Police for the prompt arrest of the accused persons.
Referring to police reports, the council noted that one accused, a 33-year-old labourer identified as Sadam Hussain and a resident of Old Showuba, was arrested on June 6 in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl. In another case, a 32-year-old resident of Ekranipathar Gaon Bura Colony, identified as Raiz Uddin, was arrested on June 3 for the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old minor.
The DSC said the incidents have raised serious concerns over the safety of children and stressed that such crimes inflict lifelong physical and psychological trauma on the victims and their families.
While commending the police for their swift action, the council demanded that the cases be fast-tracked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and that the accused, if found guilty, be awarded the maximum punishment provided under law. It also urged that no legal leniency be extended to the accused during the judicial process.
The council further appealed to the concerned authorities and welfare departments to provide immediate medical, psychological and legal assistance to the victims and their families.
Commending the Dimapur Police and the Women Police Station for acting promptly on the complaints and securing the arrests, the DSC said the community must stand united against such crimes and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of children.
Expressing solidarity with the victims and their families, the council said it would continue to monitor the progress of the cases until justice is delivered.
