22nd Nagaland Judges’ Association annual general conference held
Dimapur, February 15 (MExN): As the first point of contact for common citizens, Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer, Judge of the Gauhati High Court and Portfolio Judge for Nagaland, urged judicial officers in the district judiciary to discharge their duties not just fairly but with humility.
The district judiciary remains the foundation of the justice delivery system, Justice Longkumer added while addressing the 22nd Annual General Conference of the Nagaland Judges’ Association (NJA), held at Zone Niathu by The Park on February 14, where she attended as a special guest.
While acknowledging the infrastructural and staffing challenges faced by the district judiciary, she expressed optimism that the induction of young and capable officers would bring improvements in the days ahead.
Justice Longkumer also urged judicial officers to make sustained efforts to dispose of cases and reduce pendency across districts to ensure timely justice.
Meanwhile, Nagaland Minister for Higher Education & Tourism, Temjen Imna Along, the other special guest, described the NJA as the “cream of society” entrusted with delivering justice to the people.
He observed that many in Naga society remain unaware of their legal rights and the justice system, despite the judiciary being one of the most important organs of the State.
Stressing the need for greater legal awareness, he called for the promotion of social justice and encouraged the judiciary to be proactive in addressing issues such as tribalism that affect society.
He also presented a copy of the Constitution of India to the President of the NJA.
The conference was attended by retired District and Sessions Judges Veprusa Nyekha, K Chophy and Khape Koza. Obituary references were observed in memory of departed members — Late Neichochiyi Suyie, Late Moangkaba Imchen, Late Mayanglima and Late Imtitemsu — with a minute of silence.
The programme was chaired by Julian Sitlhou, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mokokchung, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Seyielenuo Mezhü, District and Sessions Judge, Wokha-cum-General Secretary, NJA.
The business session was chaired by Wonchibeni V Patton, Principal Judge, Family Court, Dimapur, during which various agendas were discussed and resolutions were adopted.
