Dimapur, November 20 (MExN): District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) conducted various activities in their respective jurisdictions in the month of November in order to create awareness among the masses. 

In Kohima, the KDLSA collaborated with the Doordarshan Kendra Kohima to record a discussion on the topic ‘Nagaland Money Lenders Act 2005,’ on November 19 as a part of monthly legal awareness activity. The panelists were Joshua Sheqi, Advocate Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench; Apila Sangtam, P; and Vimeno, PL.

A press release from the NSLSA informed that the discussion emphasised on how the Nagaland Money Lenders (NML) Act is being implemented in the state and the importance of license that the money lenders should acquire from an authorised lender under NML Act. 

The panelists also discussed about the interest rate i.e., 3 percent per annum, at any given rate of loan by a money lender, the punishment for violating the interest rate given under the NML Act and the criteria for obtaining money lenders license, cancellation, and jurisdiction to try such cases. It informed that the programme will be broadcast on November 22 at 5: 30 pm on Doordarshan Kendra, Kohima and YouTube as well.

Meanwhile in Mon, the DLSA on November 18 held a seminar on ‘Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. SDO(C), Mon HQ, Ilika Zhimomi, gave an opening remark while Retainer Lawyer M Moba gave a speech on COTPA Act 2003. 

On November 13, the Longleng DLSA also organised an awareness programme at Shamakok Mission School with the Longleng Ao community. Panel Lawyer M Chingmei spoke about cyber crime and provisions under India Penal Code. Ajongba Imchen, CJM and Secretary LDLSA briefed on the procedures for filing FIRs, Victim Compensation Act, Motor Vehicles Act, Protection of Women from Domestic Violence and other Social Welfare Schemes.
