Dimapur, July 10 (MExN): The Wildlife Department in Dimapur and Dimapur Municipal Council has been on a raiding spree in and around the city to check the trading of endangered wildlife species in the local markets.
A press note issued by the Wildlife Warden of Wildlife Division of Dimapur, K Hocto Sema IFS said that on July 7, the Wildlife Department rescued two Oriental Pied Hornbill and a Rose Ringed Parakeet that were being sold at Chumukedima market. The raiding party also seized some dead birds; a Barred Cuckoo dove, white throated bulbul, oriental dwarf kingfisher and a pipet, on the same day.
Hocto said the rescued birds were handed over to Range Officer of Rangapahar, while the dead birds were also disposed of by the Rangapahar Range officer.
Hocto also disclosed that the DMC on July 4 seized a pair of rabbits, a pair of Hill Mynas and a good number of dead birds from traders at the New Market in Dimapur.
Besides, the DMC also rescued a crow, an owl, a pair of Pied Hornbill and two female monitor lizards at the same place at New Market from seller on June 30, said Hocto.
