Dimapur, February 25 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) has on Wednesday condemned what it termed “the racial and sexual assault” on a third-year resident doctor from Nagaland at AIIMS Gorakhpur on February 22.
In a statement, it stated that the victim, specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology, was reportedly stalked for over 1.5 km from Orion Mall, subjected to racial slurs, physically assaulted, and molested near the institute gates by three perpetrators.
DNSU described the attack as an "outrageous violation of a dedicated medical professional," highlighting a disturbing pattern of prejudice against people from Northeast India.
“Such incidents are far from isolated,” the statement added, noting that Northeastern residents routinely face racial abuse, harassment, and violence across India.
At the same time, it appealed to the Uttar Pradesh Government and the Centre to enact and enforce stronger laws to protect vulnerable sections, especially Northeast Indians and women.
Further, it demanded immediate actions including comprehensive protection for the victim, a thorough investigation of all accused, and public awareness campaigns to eliminate racial prejudice.
“Failure to act decisively will perpetuate injustice and erode national unity,” the union cautioned.
LMFN
Meanwhile, the Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland (LMFN) also condemned the assault, calling it an “act of hatred and discrimination that has no place in India.” LMFN demanded swift legal action against the perpetrators and urged authorities, institutions, and citizens to stand united against racial discrimination.
“Racism is unacceptable, and violence against anyone because of their identity is intolerable. India must be a safe and inclusive society for all,” the press release stated.
