Do the CAG revelations of discrepancies in government departments tangibly help bring accountability in the State Government??

Some of those who voted YES had this to say:

  • Yes. But it depends on the wide media coverage by local newspapers. The civil society organisations and rights activists also needs to pick up the issues reported in the CAG Report and confront the Government on those issues. Being a constitutional body, the CAG Reports are prepared on the basis of facts and figures supported by evidence and not on hearsay. The opposition party also needs to question the Government on the issues reported in CAG report in the assembly. Public Accounts Committee (PAC) should also ensure recommendations and effective action taken based on CAG Report. Unfortunately, rampant corruption and misuse of authority reported in Annual CAG Reports have gone unnoticed for many years without any action being taken against the defaulters.

  • Yes. Making public the fiscal mismanagement of the government is one way to contain the endemic corruption in public offices. Any functioning government should be accountable to the people it governs/serves or else it risks loose legitimacy. An efficient and just government should also get it's fiscal management right and make sure that funds meant for public welfare are well utilised and not pilfered away for personal aggrandizement. The AG audit report on the discrepancy in financial management of public funds is a welcome move. The public need to be informed whether the funds meant for them are being utilised properly. The office of the AG by making public it's audit can make sure that the government of the day stick to fiscal guidelines and manage public fund judiciously.

Some of those who voted NO had this to say:

  • Nope, since the role of CAG performs auditor role only as it was robbed of Comptroller and its perusal being that of postmortem exercise. It is thus left to the electorate. That said, the revelations needs to be adequately publicise and discuss to prick citizen's conscience to realize its gravity and what it means to them.

  • No. Keep on working, great job!

  • No. There is no action against those involved while general public remains mute spectators

  • No. CAG reports have gone unnoticed and unaccounted for majority of the times

Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:

  • It's a good thing that CAG is nailing the scene of corruption practised in the government! However strictly speaking of accountability, until and unless the state government has visions for better Nagaland, CAG is just another word for information to public discourse.
