Don’t mix up an orange for an apple, Congress tells NPF

DIMAPUR, APRIL 12 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has advised the Nagaland People’s Front to not mix up ‘an orange for an apple’ on the issue of ‘office of profit’.

The NPCC is surprised to observe the NPF’s Central Office statement on 'office of profit' appearing in a section of the local media on April 12 which is contrary to their Party Supremo, Dr. Shurhozelie’s advice to “refrain from attacking each other on the issue of office of profit as such confrontation will not lead the Nagas anywhere,” an NPCC rejoinder said.

“However, the NPF Central Office is talking in line with the Congress Party that every concerned person should express their views on the issue of the ‘office of profit’ so that law makers will come out with proper defining/re-defining the ‘office of profit.’”

Reiterating that Congress Legislators had petitioned the Governor of Nagaland for disqualification of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for holding two offices which attracts the provisions of law for disqualification, Hokheto said the submitting of a petition to the Governor for disqualification of I Imkong by some DAN MLAs for holding an “office of profit” as Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly has no substance.

“The NPF Party brought up the issue of Opposition Leader with a revengeful attitude” and personalized the issue against Imkong alleging that he holds an ‘office of profit’ without having any substance, the NPCC stated.

In a separate release, NPCC President Hokheto Sumi said, “The NPF has been claiming that the DAN Government tried to protect the Office of the Leader of Opposition but at the same time the Congress reminds the NPF that the Office of the Leader of Opposition is an established office under the Parliamentary institution and it is also meant for them (NPF) when they will be in the Opposition Bench.”

At this juncture no political party should panic on the petition submitted to the Governor, who is bound to act only on the recommendation of the Election Commission of India, he said. “Rather we are to wait till Parliament redefines the ‘office of profit’, which may ultimately effect the State to go for major amendments of the said Act to fulfill the Constitutional obligations.”
