Dimapur, Agusut 6 (MExN): District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) meetings held in Peren, Tseminyu and Longleng on Thursday reviewed development programmes, disaster preparedness and preparations for the Independence Day celebrations, while also taking up district-specific issues.
Peren: The Peren DPDB meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner's Conference Hall under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner and Vice-Chairman Hiazu Meru. MLA and DPDB Chairman Namri Nchang was unable to attend due to prior engagements.
The deputy commissioner informed members that a mass social work would be conducted at the DC Office Complex on August 7 as part of preparations for the Independence Day celebrations and urged all departments to ensure staff participation.
On the construction of government office buildings at the district headquarters, he said Dobashis had been deputed to verify the status of ongoing works and asked heads of departments to regularly supervise the projects.
The board discussed the School Education Department's order to close Government Primary School, Libemphai. During the deliberations, the Senior SDEO informed the house that although the school had been functioning smoothly since its establishment, no government teacher had ever been posted there and the institution had been managed by community teachers. Despite the closure order, the school continues to function with 26 students under community teachers.
The board decided to write to the School Education Department seeking a review of the closure order and the immediate posting of government teachers.
On disaster preparedness, the deputy commissioner urged departments to remain vigilant and promptly report any disaster-related incidents, noting increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
The board also reviewed the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP), with the deputy commissioner asking line departments to actively participate in village-level planning. It approved the LADP/ICONIC schemes for the 6 Tening and 7 Peren Assembly Constituencies and also approved the registration of the Affected Land Owner Association of National Highway-129A, Package-1A.
Chief Technical Officer of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jalukie, L Babita Devi, presented the activities and programmes of the KVK. The Departments of Economics and Statistics and School Education were asked to make presentations at the next meeting.
Tseminyu: The Tseminyu DPDB meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Japheth Woch, reviewed the minutes of the previous meeting and discussed preparations for the Independence Day celebrations, assigning responsibilities to various departments and stakeholders.
Assistant Urban Development Officer L Rokovono made a presentation on Solid Waste Management 2026. The deputy commissioner stressed the need for timely preparation of district-level action plans involving government departments, civil society organisations, NGOs and other stakeholders to strengthen waste management.
The Horticulture Department also presented its activities undertaken in the district.
Longleng: The Longleng DPDB meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner and Vice-Chairman W Manpai Phom, reviewed the impact of recent heavy rains on the district.
The deputy commissioner said incessant rainfall had caused widespread damage, disrupting road connectivity and telecom services while affecting villages, agricultural land, forests and houses. He directed agriculture and allied departments to submit detailed assessment reports on damage to farmlands and telecom infrastructure.
The board deliberated on district awards after ADC Thungchanbemo Tungoe briefed members on revised selection criteria that would include civil society organisations, NGOs and institutions in addition to government employees.
District Commandant, Home Guards, Chibeni Ezung, proposed the establishment of a Civil Defence unit in the district.
Executive Engineer, Transmission Division, Mokokchung, Er Hokaito Assumi, briefed the board on the 132/33 KV substation at Pongo village and sought support from the administration in resolving issues with landowners during vegetation clearance.
The board also discussed a proposal submitted by the Eastern Naga Women Organisation for drainage infrastructure development, following which the deputy commissioner directed the concerned department to conduct a comprehensive field assessment.
Assistant Programme Coordinator, DRDA, Y Tongpang Phom, presented departmental activities during the meeting.
The board also reviewed preparations for the Independence Day celebrations and decided to conduct a mass social work on August 8. The Education Department was entrusted with presenting its activities at the next DPDB meeting.
