Dr. Thromwa Konyak issued show cause notice for seeking votes on ‘religious lines’

DIMAPUR, MARCH 30 (MExN): The Office of the Commissioner and Returning Officer, M Patton has issued a show cause notice to Independent candidate for 1-Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency 2019 election, Dr MM Thromwa Konyak for allegedly seeking votes on religious lines. 

The show cause notice stated that the candidate in question had circulated in the social media that “if he wins the election, he would build churches and send 10, 000 missionaries into India and to countries across the world to spread Christianity.”

The show cause notice also stated that an article published by the ‘The Times of India’ on March 29, 2019 through an interview with Dr. MM Thromwa Konyak further reaffirmed the promises.

The RO pointed out that as per the General Conduct under the Model Code of Conduct, “No party or candidate shall include in any activity which may aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tension between different castes and communities, religion or linguistic.”

Stating that Dr. MM Thromwa Konyak has violated the model code of conduct by seeking votes on religious lines, the show cause notice has directed him to respond to the show cause notice within 48 hours from the date of the issue of the notice.
