DIMAPUR, AUGUST 14 (MExN): The Drama Club of St Joseph University (SJU), in collaboration with the Department of English, organised a programme under the theme “Peace Behind the Curtain” on August 12 to celebrate art, drama and creative expression.

Addressing the gathering, Prof V T Vasagan, Dean of Social Sciences and Management, said transformation comes to society through literature. He stressed the importance of drama, stating, “Drama is not just some kind of imagination; it goes beyond imagination. It is a tool for expression of feelings and brings events from society to the stage.” He added that drama does not end with a simple reading but continues to make an impact.

Drama Club president Toto Zhimo, in his introduction, noted the irony of the theme, saying that while chaos often exists behind the curtains, drama historically stemmed from miracle and mystery plays aimed at spreading peace and joy. “Peace is not always the loud absence of conflict, but the quiet presence of understanding,” he said, adding that true harmony begins in quiet spaces — in the hearts we nurture, the words we choose, and the way we treat others when no one is watching.

The programme featured a variety of performances by students and club members, including songs, dances, musical pieces, mimicry, and storytelling. The highlight was a re-enactment of Easterine Kire’s book Don’t Run, My Love, the story of Visenuo, a widow, and her daughter Tuonou, and the events following their encounter with a stranger during harvest time.

The first session was hosted by Dzüveno Keyho of the 5th semester, Department of English, while the second was hosted by Toketoli H Rochill of the 3rd semester, Department of Biotechnology, and Aghato of the 3rd semester, Department of English.

The event was attended by SJU’s administrative heads, students of the English Department, faculty, Drama Club members, and participants from other departments.
