Duke of York visits Kohima war cemetery

Kohima, May 1 (DIPR): The Duke of York, Prince Andrew paid tributes to the fallen soldiers who laid down their lives at the Battle of Kohima during the Second World War on behalf of The Queen of England in celebration of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee on May 1 at the Kohima War Cemetery. His Royal Highness and his entourage were shown around the War Cemetery by the Care Taker, Atuo Mezhur after laying a wreath at the War Memorial. The Duke of York was received by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, his Cabinet Colleagues and a host of Government and Assam Rifle officials on his arrival at the Kohima War Cemetery.

Prince Andrew unveils monolith at Kisama
His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew, The Duke of York unveiled a monolith which was erected at the entrance of the World War Museum at Kisama, to commemorate his visit and mark his presence in Nagaland on May 1.

Later, The Duke of York shook hands with the World War II Veterans numbering around 12 of them at Kisama and gave a patient hearing to the problems narrated by them. "I will see what I can do", the Prince assured and further said, "The whole of India holds you in high esteem, and what you did change the course of history". You took a clear stand and nothing can be said more than that, Thank You, Prince Andrew commented.

The Duke of York also paid a visit to the World War II Museum at Kisama and keenly read the historical accounts of the battle of Kohima displayed at the Museum. His Royal Highness was accorded a grand Guard of Honour by the 13th IR Battalion at Kisama. Before his departure from Kisama, he thanked the Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio and the people of Nagaland for the great hospitality extended to him during his visit.

Nagas are appreciated world wide for their hospitality and being the perfect host, the Women Development Department under the supervision of Additional Chief Secretary & Nagaland Commissioner, Banuo Z. Jamir worked tirelessly in preparing the food by themselves to be served to His Royal Highness and his entourage at the Bamboo Hall Kisama, on May 1.

The menus offered were creamy mixed vegetable soup. The main course included Rice and Breads (White Nagaland special steamed Rice, Local Red steamed Rice, Assorted Bread, stuffed potato chops) Fish wrapped in spinach, grilled chicken, chicken amsu broth, sliced pork roast with ginger, beef roast. The vegetarian menu included, broccoli and cheese gratin, steamed mixed vegetable, pumpkin and kholar beans gravy.

The salad platter comprised of cucumber and sweet corn salad, pasta salad, melon and bean salad with creamy dressing and mixed vegetable salad. The dessert service offered included peach and chocolate tart, chocolate trifle, mango delight, vanilla pannacotta in French strawberry sauce while beverage served was fresh ginger drink, "Tangmo" Herbal Drink.
