In an unplanned city like Dimapur, narrow roads have become a big inconvenience, at the same time, coming in the way of developing public amenity. With houses built right by the roadsides, expanding the main thoroughfares has become highly unlikely.

However, a locality has come up with a novel initiative to widen roads, albeit in a smaller scale. With the objective of making way for drainage and footpaths, the Duncan Bosti Council, Dimapur has asked landowners in the locality to make available a bit of their lands.

According to the council, the decision to widen the roads in the colony was made at its annual general meeting held in October 2019. Subsequent to the decision, all landowners in the colony were asked “to leave a gap of minimum 5 feet between the (perimeter) wall and the road so as to leave provision for future development of drainage and footpath.”

In response to the call, some of the landowners have voluntarily started tearing down fences and building new ones at their own expense, the council informed.
