Kohima, August 24 (MExN): Director of Youth Resources and Sports, Government of Nagaland, Kethosituo Sekhose, NCS, on Saturday urged students to balance academics with creativity and extracurricular pursuits, stating that while “talent and perseverance are formidable, education enhances them.”
Addressing the 56th Freshers’ Day of Kohima College, Kohima (KCK) as Guest Speaker, Sekhose reflected on the institution’s journey from a night school for working students to one of Nagaland’s established higher education centres. He highlighted the wide opportunities available to today’s youth in academics, sports, content creation, and emerging industries.
Drawing on examples from sports, Sekhose noted that determination and discipline could elevate local players into international athletes. He encouraged students to capitalise on the opportunities arising from the AI-driven economy and digital content creation, while emphasising the need to pursue excellence in multiple fields.
The celebration at the College Courtyard welcomed the new undergraduate batch with the college anthem, invocation, and a range of cultural performances, including a duet by Bowe Elah and Wetshelhi Chirah. The programme also featured the induction of the Kohima College Students’ Council (KCSC) for 2025-26 and the much-anticipated Mr. & Miss Fresher contest, won by Political Science student Mhalezolie and English student Nyahpo Pinyeih.
Outgoing General Secretary Chutatu C. Thupitor presented a report on the student council’s activities, describing his tenure as one of service and teamwork, while incoming General Secretary Yeshika Achumi pledged to introduce new initiatives with the support of faculty and students.
Principal Dr. Vitsosie Vüprü in his welcome address reminded the students that the college’s motto, Search for Excellence, was both a challenge and a guiding principle. He congratulated students for past achievements, including 13 securing positions in the University’s Top-10 list last year, and called on freshers to contribute meaningfully to the institution’s growth.
The day concluded with tokens of appreciation, welcome gifts for new students, and a vote of thanks by KCSC Assistant General Secretary Rülevelü Shijoh.
