‘Education is a fundamental right’

Dimapur, Oct 6 (MExN): The 2nd volunteer instructors training organised by the District Literacy Mission Authority, Dimapur was inaugurated by DC Dimapur, V. Hekali Zhimomi, at the Circuit House Dimapur today.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner stressed on the importance of education as a fundamental and constitutional right. She said as Nagaland has a literacy rate of 77.11% the Volunteers should reach out to the remaining 22% illiterate people. She hoped that the volunteers who are performing the highest form of service should be sincere and further requested them to motivate adult illiterate leaders for more participation in the learning process. She also stressed that understanding the importance of education was the most vital role in expressing oneself freely.

While delivering the key note address, Supervisor Adult Education Dimapur, S. Toiho Yeptho quoting an estimate, he said there were 862 million illiterate adults in the world where India had the  largest share of adult illiterates. The 2001 census has prevailed that India’s 263 million illiterates were estimated to be of the 15 plus age group. He said that the National Literacy Mission targets 75% literacy by 2007 adding that the “People’s Movement for Literacy” was first started in Ernakulum district of Kerala in 1990. Dimapur district has 78.15% literacy rate. The supervisor urged the volunteer instructors to reach out to the rest of the illiterate and  perform their noble job sincerely to make a difference in the society.

Highlights of the programme were welcome address by DIS Dimapur, Hetoli Sumi, special items by TLC Centre, West Yard and TLC Centre Thahekhu and short speech by Deputy Director, Adult Education Kohima. Vote of thanks was given by NC Supervisor Adult Education, Hekani and the programme was chaired by DEO Dimapur, L. Vikuto Sumi. The training for the volunteer instructors will conclude on October 7.
