Wokha | August 3

In a tragic instance of the ongoing human-elephant conflict in Wokha district, a 72-year-old farmer from New Riphyim Village was killed in a suspected wild elephant attack on August 2.

The deceased, identified as Rentsamo Odyuo, had reportedly gone to his rubber plantation on August 2 but did not return home.

Concerned villagers launched a search the following morning and eventually found his body. The nature of the injuries suggested a possible wild elephant attack, they said.

According to local residents, a herd of approximately 15 elephants, including calves, has been residing in the nearby forest area, significantly disrupting farming, plantation activities, and daily routines.

They expressed concern over the recurring threat and alleged a lack of adequate response from authorities.

The villagers also cautioned that if no effective measures are implemented, they may be forced to resort to traditional methods to safeguard themselves and their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, Tokaho Kinimi, Wildlife Warden of the Dimapur Wildlife Division, visited the village to assess the situation and convey condolences to the bereaved family.

Kinimi also held discussions with villagers regarding the ongoing human-elephant conflict in the region.

The Wokha district falls under the jurisdiction of the Dimapur Wildlife Division.
