English, most preferred medium of instruction in Nagaland government schools

English is the most preferred medium of instruction in the majority of government schools in Nagaland, according to a survey by SCERT. It was followed by Mother Tongue and Nagamese.  

The State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT)’s “Survey on School Based Statistics in Nagaland” also noted that the same trends were more or less observed across all the districts.  

In Mokokchung district, out of 175 schools, English is the medium of instruction in 159 schools, followed by Mother Tongue in 9 schools. The medium of instruction in 7 schools was Nagamese. The same kind of trend found in the districts like Dimapur, Kiphire, Kohima, Phek, the survey said.  

However, in Tuensang district, out of 170 schools, though English was the adopted medium of instruction in 96 schools, the number of schools with Mother Tongue as primary teaching medium was highest at 52 schools. In 22 schools, Nagamese was the medium of instruction. The same kind of trend was also found in Zunheboto district, the survey stated.
