Eri silk development in rural areas of Nagaland

The State’s Sericulture Department stated that the Sericulture industry depends solely on the development of host plant plantation being the feeds of silkworm.

In view of the favorable climatic condition prevailing in the state, all varieties of host plant are all abundantly available and for which all the four types of silkworm rearing is being practiced.

However, during the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012), the department of sericulture has given emphasis for development of Eri Silk registering a steady growth by achieving a production of 200.00 MT in terms of cocoon.The department has been implementing Eri Silk Development in rural areas and is funded under negotiated loan from NABARD.

According to the annual administrative report of the state’s sericulture department, an amount of Rs. 600.00 lakhs has been released for the implementation of the project during 2008-09 to 2010-11. The major project component under the project is for taking up host plant cultivation and silkworm rearing, raising of seedlings and silkworm seed drainages.

A total of 1080 acres/beneficiaries in 8 districts have been covered for raising of plantation and rearing, 6.00 lakh for seedlings has been raised and distributed to the farmers and 6 nos of private drainages has been established with a capacity to produce 50,000 dfls annually. The beneficiaries covered under the project have been assisted with free planting materials, financial assistance, material support in the form of rearing appliances and CGI material for construction of rearing shed besides imparting training on various activities.

During the year 2011-12, the project is being implemented in three district of Mon, Tuensang and Dimapur covering 180 acres of land/beneficiaries, the report added.
