Essential Commodities: WSYF asks dist admin, DMC to regulate prices

Dimapur, June 1 (MExN): The Western Sumi Youth Front on Tuesday urged the Dimapur district administration and Dimapur Municipal Council to step in and regulate the prices of all essential commodities.

A press release to this effect was issued by the WSYF Media Cell on Tuesday, stating that many traders in Dimapur have been taking advantage of the lockdown and resorted to selling various commodities at inflated prices, especially essential commodities. The poor public are made to pay the heavy price, it added.

The WSYF claimed that the price of mustard oil (Neeraj) which used to be Rs 100 per litre has shot up to Rs 140 per litre; mustard oil (Engine) from Rs 130 to Rs 180; Rice (Parimol) from Rs 900 per bag to Rs 1,170 per bag; Rice (Nice) Rs 1,200 per bag to Rs 1,450 per bag and the price of Naga dal has risen from Rs 50-60 per kg to Rs 90 per kg.

Likewise, all other commodities like potato, dal, eggs, etc., are being sold at exorbitant rates, it claimed.

“The fact that the inflation of almost all commodities is taking place despite strict directive by government authorities and business bodies shows utter disregard to the authorities that issued such directives,” the release stated, as it questioned the authorities on whether any mechanisms have been deployed to check prices essential commodities in the market.

It further urged the district administration and DMC to enforce the sale of each item at the correct price before June 11. “Failure to regulate and enforce the correct price would compel the WSYF to deploy its volunteers to check such inflation, purely in the interest of the suffering public,” the release stated.
