Ethnic tension grips Moreh; peace mission today

DIMAPUR, JUNE 10 (MExN): In the backdrop of the community clashes in Moreh and the tension thereof, various organizations of Manipur sat for a meeting at the residence of MLA Deven today. The president of the Kuki Students Organization, P. Simte, when contacted, stated that the situation was cooling down and that with the permission of the Chief Minister, the different organizations planned to visit Moreh tomorrow. It was also revealed that five MLAs and two Ministers will also accompany the party to Moreh. 

Meanwhile, the Magisterial Inquiry into the Saturday killing at Moreh town has been ordered to be completed within 15 days. The state government has also assured to pay exgratias to the next of kin of those killed and find a placement of jobs for one in each family of the deceased.

Till the filing of this story it has been reported that of the 11 killed, five dead bodies have been brought to the morgue of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) where the remaining bodies are at Moreh since they hailed from the Moreh area.

Local reports stated that the situation in Imphal is highly charged today following the Saturday incident of the border town of Moreh where 11 persons were killed in separate incidents belonging to two different communities of Manipur. Of the deceased, 5 were Kukis while 6 were Meiteis.

Even as the indefinite curfew has continued to be clamped in the Moreh town to quell the ever rising tension between the two communities, a large number of people at Khurai-Lamlong area in Imphal blocked the roads demanding justice from the state government since early this morning.

The Saturday’s killings of 11 persons at the Moreh town in the Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district were the follow up incident of a killing of a Meitei youth by the cadres of a Kuki based militant outfit.

The 11 deceased belonged to both the Kuki and the Meitei communities.

Elaborate and tight security measures have been taken up in Imphal as a pre-emptive step to deal any eventuality.

BSF and Manipur Police commando personnel have mainly been deployed in Imphal area and the tighter security measures have been taken wherever mixed communities reside.

Reports from Moreh said that the people, who had fled across the border to the Myanmar side from the Moreh town yesterday fearing that the communal clashes might erupt, have been brought back to Moreh town today. Altogether 516 people have been safely brought back by the authorities.
