Extend help to people affected by natural calamities, KVGOA appeals

• Urges against hiking essential commodities price, taxi fare
• Banks, telcos requested to help under CSR

Kohima, August 5 (MExN): In light of the present crisis caused by the recent natural calamities in the State capital, Kohima Village Gazetted Officers’ Association (KVGOA) has emphasized the need for individuals as well as groups/organizations to render helping hand to the affected families.

The association had convened an emergency meeting on August 4 to assess the crisis, “a situation unprecedented in scale.”

It solicited the advice of the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima and afforded suggestions and any help it could offer to the administration in carrying out relief operations in the State capital.

In consultation with the Kohima Village Council, KVGOA in a press release issued by President Er. Keviletuo Yiese and General Secretary Er. Medozhazo Rutsa further appealed to various organizations and groups, and also shared views and suggestions with an aim to ease/manage the crisis effectively.

Business community: An appeal was made to the business community to ensure that the prices of essential commodities are checked so that no undue human made burden is placed on the general public, who are already reeling under a huge crisis created by natural causes.

Taxi/public transport unions: KVGOA appealed to the public transport/taxi services (both local and zonal) to give helping hand to the society in this time of great need by not inflating the fares to exorbitant levels. “While it is understandable that many factors are prompting the hike in fares (fuel cost, extended routes), we place this earnest request on behalf of the larger public to the public transport community, to stand in solidarity with the people in this time of great need,” it added.

Banks: Given the “extraordinary crisis” being faced today, KVGOA appealed to all the banks doing business in Kohima to render help in alleviating the hardships of the general public and the displaced families in particular by contributing in cash or kind as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Telecom service providers: Highlighting that communication is key in times of crisis like this, an appeal was made to the telecom service providers in Nagaland to do their bit in containing the situation by providing good cellular signal and also helping the individual customers with complimentary free data/talk time as part of CSR policy.

Citizens: Given the fact that many families have become displaced in the last few weeks, and with the weather forecast giving a “very pessimistic few more weeks ahead,” KVGOA requested all the citizens/house owners in Kohima to “spare your property if available and lend a hand in providing urgent temporary shelter to the displaced families to sit out this period of adversity.”

With the hope and belief that the community is strong enough to weather out the crisis, KVGOA informed the people, especially those in need, that “the larger community of humanity is standing behind them and so to remain positive despite the circumstances they find themselves in.”
