Wokha | April 17
In a move to strengthen road safety and improve traffic enforcement, the Wokha District Road Safety Committee has installed five CCTV cameras and procured two breath analysers as part of a broader initiative supported by the Transport Department and implemented in coordination with district authorities.
A dedicatory programme for the equipment was held on Wednesday at the Control Room of the Wokha Police Station on Apil 17. The newly installed CCTV cameras have been placed at key locations, including the Clock Tower, the area below the DC office, and Tsumang Lake. These are connected to a central monitoring unit at the police station, which will be operated by enforcement personnel.
The breath analysers, capable of providing instant printed results, will be used to check alcohol consumption among drivers and pedestrians suspected of being under the influence. Authorities say this will enable quicker and more effective enforcement of traffic regulations.
The initiative also aims to support efforts in curbing illegal activities such as drug peddling and substance abuse, which are of growing concern in the region. Plans are in place to expand CCTV coverage to additional locations in the coming phases.

Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar expressed appreciation for the District Road Safety Committee members for their proactive role and leadership. He extended gratitude to the Transport Department for not only funding the initiative but also empowering the committee to determine key priorities for implementation.
“Though it’s a small beginning, it has the potential to make a bigger impact in the future,” said Kumar. He commended the tireless efforts of the enforcement teams, including the police and traffic personnel, and said the community initiative is intended to complement and strengthen the work of these agencies. The installation of CCTV cameras and breath analysers, he added, is a significant step in that direction.
“Enforcement is a tough job, and officers cannot be everywhere at once,” Kumar said. “These gadgets are meant to assist, not replace, human vigilance.”
As part of additional safety enhancements, the Road Safety Committee has also installed eight convex mirrors across the town to address visibility issues and reduce traffic blind spots.
Superintendent of Police M. Rhovisie Nyuwi, who also spoke at the event, underlined the increasing need for technological assistance in traffic management due to the growing number of vehicles. He noted that tools like CCTV cameras and breath analysers are essential for effective traffic regulation and crime prevention but cautioned against overdependence on technology.
However, he cautioned against over-reliance on gadgets alone. “We are not yet at a stage where we can fully depend on equipment. It is equally important to invest time, energy, and consistent effort on the ground,” he stated.
Reiterating the importance of strict law enforcement, he concluded with a call for collective responsibility in making Wokha's roads safer for all.
Plans are underway to expand coverage across different locations in Wokha in subsequent phases to ensure better road monitoring and public safety.
