Farmers at Hekheshe receive training on vegetable farming

Dimapur, March 12 (MExN): AICRP (Vegetable Crops), Nagaland Centre, SASRD, NU under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) conducted a farmer’s training on ‘Scientific cultivation of summer vegetable crops’ at Hekheshe village. The training was organised to educate farmers on the importance of package practices and plant protection in vegetable production and the benefits and advantages in growing vegetable crops.

The farmers were also educated on the various pests and diseases that they might encounter during the cropping season and importantly to manage the pests and disease with eco-friendly tactics, a press release informed on Friday. 

The technical session on ‘Scientific cultivation of summer vegetable crops’ was delivered by Dr Moakala Changkiri, Scientist, AICRP (VC), Dept of Horticulture, SASRD: NU where she emphasized on the methodology and various ideas on production of vegetable crops without the use of inorganic sources. She demonstrated on the importance of nursery particularly for high value vegetable crops in order to get better economic returns as well as seedling root dip method with the use of Biofertilizers in order to get a better crop. The participants were also appraised on the various physiological disorders in vegetables and discussed on how they are different from the diseases and how can they be managed, the release stated.

The training which was attended by 50 farmer participants started with a brief introduction by Prof Akali Sema, Dean, SASRD, NU &  Incharge TSP- AICRP (Vegetable Crops) who highlighted on the importance of vegetables to the farmers and what all vegetables can be grown successfully in a village with hilly topography like Hekheshe.

The wrap up session was conducted by Dr Aastik Jha, Scientist, AICRP-VC, SASRD: NU, where seeds of summer vegetable crops were distributed to all the participants. The GB of Hekheshe village on behalf of all the farmers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to AICRP-Vegetable Crops, Department of Horticulture, SASRD: NU for organizing such training programme in their village, the release stated.
