Farmers learn importance of agro-met advisories

Medziphema, November 22 (MExN): To create awareness on the importance of agro-met advisories in the agriculture and allied sectors, GKMS unit of ICAR Nagaland Centre organised farmer awareness programmes at Englan Village, Wokha district and Tichipami village, Zunheboto district on October 7 and November 18 respectively.

The programmes were also part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, a press release from ICAR stated.

During both the meetings, a Technical Officer emphasized on the importance of Agromet Advisory as it can make a tremendous difference to agriculture production by taking the advantage of weather information and minimizing the adverse impact of malevolent weather. In the current scenario, getting access to weather related information will help the farmer to plan their cultivation in advance, the release stated, adding that participants were encouraged to utilise the advisory that is disseminated through different modes - SMS, Whatsapp, Meghdoot app, Newspapers.

Farmers were also imparted knowledge on soil health under changing climate situations by Dr Christy BK Sangma Scientist (Soil science), ICAR Medziphema. The participants were also apprised on the different technologies developed by ICAR. Bendangla Imsong, Subject matter Specialist (Plant Breeding) KVK Wokha gave a lecture on crop production and climate change.

Following this a round of open discussion was held where queries were clarified. Altogether 88 farmers from Old Riphyim, Yikhum, Englan and Tichipami village benefitted from the programme. Folders, wall hanging calendars on monthly advisory, booklets on weather advisory were distributed to the farmers, the release stated.
