Mission policy statement of Nagaland’s agriculture department

Nagaland state’s agriculture department has announced its vision to have a feasible and economically viable agriculture by 2030.
This was stated in the Annual Administrative Report 2024-2025 of the Department of Agriculture presented by Nagaland’s Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio at the 7th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Kohima on September 2.
The Department has set its Mission Policy Statement to promote organic agriculture in the hilly terrains, pioneering the state in Rain-fed Farming System, transform subsistence agriculture to commercial agriculture in a sustainable manner by extending demand driven services to farmers and scaling up agriculture through farm mechanization in a cluster approach.
It has set the goals to achieve food security by 2030, empower and improve living standards of farming community, empowerment of small and marginal farmers considering gender equality, increase crop production and productivity, promote farm mechanization and resilient agriculture.
In the form of strategies, the department has announced to adopt ICT in agriculture, adoption of seed village and seed infrastructure development, adoption of SRI, Line transplanting and Direct seeding in paddy, advocate soil amelioration, capacity building and up-scaling of skills, commercialization of selected agriculture crops, emphasize Integrated Pest Management, identification and promotion of local cultivars, improve farm water management, mechanization of agriculture.
The Report also underlined the need to practice of double, inter, relay, mixed cropping and Integrated Farming System, promote indigenous practices in context with climate change, promote Integrated Nutrient Management, promote Women in Agriculture, promotion of organic farming in promising areas, promotion of Post-Harvest Management technologies for agriculture marketing, stabilization & intensification of jhum practices, strengthening of extension services for effective transfer and adoption of appropriate technology, strengthening of Research and Development of Rain-fed Agriculture.
It also envisaged timely distribution of quality seeds and to enhance seed replacement rate.
