FGN criticises UNC of acting against Naga interests, seeks apology

Dimapur, June 13 (MExN): The Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) has issued a statement criticising the United Naga Council (UNC) over the release of Kuki detainees on June 9 and demanded that the organisation apologise for its actions.

In the statement issued on June 13, the FGN alleged that the UNC, along with certain organisations and political actors, had acted at the behest of outside influences and contrary to the interests of the Naga people.

Referring to the release of Kuki detainees from the custody of Naga Village Guards, the FGN claimed that the decision was taken without the knowledge of the families of six abducted Nagas, the Zeliangrong community and other relevant civil society organisations. It alleged that the move had created divisions and further complications in the region.

The FGN also questioned the role of the UNC, stating that the organisation was originally established to safeguard the interests and ancestral land of the southern Nagas but had allegedly failed to fulfil that responsibility.

The statement further asserted that if the UNC continued to act in a manner perceived to be against the interests of the Naga people, it should consider dissolving itself on moral grounds, while adding that the people had the democratic right to seek changes in its leadership.

Calling for unity among Nagas, the FGN appealed to the public to remain steadfast and resist what it described as "evil forces" without fear, while asserting that democratic-minded Nagas and Naga national workers stood with the people.
