Fish farmers attend seminar on marketing strategies

Dimapur, January 21 (MExN): One day seminar on "Awareness on Marketing Strategies" was conducted at Doyang for the Fish Mongers and Fishermen Community of Doyang reservoir on January 18 by Department of Fisheries, Wokha.
District Fisheries Officer, Ketusielie Angami in a press release said that the Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Rovilato Mor, spoke during the seminar. He impressed upon the fishermen that if they want to progress economically, they should cooperate with Fisheries department in the planning process. He also stressed on the importance of catch record statistics and maintenance which would help the department in the future planning process. He also said that Doyang fish is in great demand in other districts of Nagaland and therefore the fish dealers should first start a marketing network within Nagaland and not export to other neighbouring states. In this way fish imports to the state can be reduced to a certain extent.
District Fisheries Officer, Ketusielie Angami spoke during the technical session. He exhorted the participants on the need for developing marketing strategies without taking market risks. He said that, market survey was vital for starting a marketing network in the state.  Quality of fish is a factor which should never be compromised as this contributes to consumers' satisfaction and better pricing of fish products. The speaker also said that the only viable livelihood option for the fishermen community of Doyang in the future years, would be to practice sustainable fishing methods.
The President of Fish Monger Society, Senkathung said that on completion of the ice plant at Doyang, which is under construction, would greatly boost the fish marketing sector in the state and therefore requested the Deputy Commissioner, wokha to press the Department of Fisheries for timely completion of the ice plant.
