Five organizations have been conferred with Kohima District Road Safety Award–2026 by Kohima District Road Safety Committee (KDRSC) in commemoration of National Road Safety Month on February 16 at DBDB Conference Hall, Kohima.
This award is an initiative of the KDRSC since 2025, to recognize individuals, groups, organizations or departments contributing towards road safety activities in and around Kohima district.
The awardees carried a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each along with citation and helmet and it was jointly handed over by MLA and Kohima DPDB chairman Kevipodi Sophie, Kohima deputy commissioner B Henok Buchem and Kohima SP Krodi Rhetso.
The awardees included; Upper Jail Colony Panchayat, Jotsoma Youth Organisation, Kezoma Village Council, Naga Bazaar Youth Organisation and personnel of Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC).
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Kohima Sadar EAC Dr Riku Khutso while Kohima RTO & KDRSC Ex-Officio Member Secretary Roben Mesen led reading of citations.
‘Avoid random parking’
Addressing the award ceremony, Kevipodi Sophie said that traffic congestion and improper parking cannot be addressed by authorities alone and require collective responsibility from the public.
He appreciated the organisations for assisting the administration in ensuring smoother traffic flow and expressed hope that the spirit of cooperation would continue for the betterment of the district.
Kohima DC and Ex-Officio Chairman KDRSC B. Henok Buchem stated that the five awardees were selected after careful consideration from among many deserving groups.
He said village councils and youth organisations had silently borne the hardships during landslides and extended full cooperation to the administration, helping ease congestion and maintain public movement.
Buchem acknowledged that traffic regulation remains a continuing challenge and stressed the need for cooperation from village councils, colony authorities, youth organisations and citizens.
The DC added that the administration will strengthen transport regulations and introduce further measures in the coming months.
He also appealed to citizens to follow traffic rules and avoid random parking and obstruction of public roads.
Awardees
Upper Jail Colony Panchayat: Upper Jail Colony Panchayat was recognised for proactive coordination with district authorities and exemplary regulation of road side parking of vehicles from Jail Colony junction to Assamese Church junction, leading to overall improvement of traffic in Kohima town.
Jotsoma Youth Organisation: Jotsoma Youth Organisation was honoured for proactive community assistance and public service during landslides at Liezocha and Kezanu sections of National Highway-29 and diversion of vehicular traffic via Jotsoma Bypass Road during the last monsoon season.
Kezoma Village Council: Kezoma Village Council was recognised for assistance and cooperation rendered to district authorities during diversion of heavy vehicular traffic via Kezoma village jurisdiction during the last monsoon season.
Naga Bazaar Youth Organisation: Naga Bazaar Youth Organisation was recognised for proactive road side parking management in the colony and installation of barricades along the NHAK junction to Census Point route, leading to significant improvement of vehicular traffic.
Personnel of ICCC: Personnel of the ICCC were recognised for dedicated service towards the overall improvement of traffic in Kohima town. The personnel includes; Hav Thejangulie (NPTO), Hav K Luntsuba Yim (NPTO), T/C Razhuvotso Rhutso, T/C Surhokhoyi Veyie and T/C Vikholie-o Kense.
