North East Games 2024: Five-setter heartbreak for Nagaland as volleyball competitions spikes off

Manipur, Mizoram register wins

It was a heartbreaking start for Nagaland fans at the 3rd North East Games 2024 Volleyball (Men’s) competition. The home team fell in a five-set thriller against Arunachal Pradesh at the Shooting Complex in Chümoukedima on March 19.

Nagaland began strongly, winning the first set 25-16. However, Arunachal Pradesh fought back, securing the second set 25-22. The third set mirrored the first, with Nagaland taking it 25-17.

Unfortunately, the tide turned in the fourth set, with Arunachal Pradesh winning 25-17. The deciding fifth set saw Nagaland lose 12-15 after initially leading.

Nagaland will lookto bounce back in their next match against Assam on March 20th at 9:30 AM. Meanwhile, Sikkim will play Arunachal Pradesh.

In Pool-B, Manipur dominated Meghalaya with a convincing 3-0 victory, while Mizoram achieved a similar result against Tripura.

The Nagaland Volleyball Association (NVA) is organizing the Volleyball competition under the aegis of the Nagaland Olympic Association.

Earlier, Advisor and Former NVA President HK Khulu graced the opening ceremony as a special guest. He encouraged the participants to strive for excellence and make their mark on the national and international stages. Khulu acknowledged the lack of top-tier sports infrastructure in the Northeast but highlighted the improvement in the quality of games over the years.

Emphasising the unifying power of sports, Khulu urged all teams to compete with fair play, passion, and a spirit of unity and uniqueness.

NVA President N Jacob Yanthan, in his presidential address, described volleyball as not just a test of strength and agility, but also a dance of coordination and teamwork strategy. He commended the dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to excellence displayed by all participating teams.

He hoped that the North East Games 2024 will be a platform for showcasing the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage and the boundless potential of our youth.
