Kohima, June 16 (MExN): The Angami Students' Union (ASU) has expressed serious concern over the sinking stretch along National Highway-2 in the Phesama area of Kohima district and urged the district administration to intervene urgently to ensure immediate restoration and safe passage for commuters.

In a representation submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, the Union stated that the massive road subsidence in the affected segment of the Kohima-Mao route has become a major safety hazard for the public.

While acknowledging the efforts made by the district administration and state government so far, the ASU alleged that the “lackadaisical workmanship” of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) reflects a “larger lapse in accountability and quality control.”

Highlighting the impact on students, the ASU said a significant number of school and college students have been severely affected by the disruption. “Many continue to pursue their academic responsibilities under extremely challenging circumstances, with exams and daily classes being heavily hampered,” the representation stated.

The union further noted that the crisis extends beyond education, disrupting both intra- and inter-state travel, affecting livelihoods, essential services, and the general public movement.

The ASU urged the district administration to undertake "extraordinary measures" and ensure: immediate restoration of the affected highway stretch with stringent quality monitoring and adherence to timeline; and provision of a safe and viable alternate route to facilitate uninterrupted movement.
