DIMAPUR, APRIL 17 (MExN): A Food Safety Awareness programme was conducted at Cultural Hall, Piphema, covering the villages of Piphema A and Piphema New on April 17.

The event was organized by the Food Safety Dimapur Zone under the establishment of the Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur, as part of the state’s 2024-2025 food safety work plan.

The programme focused on educating local entrepreneurs, including Self Help Groups (SHGs) and home-based food business operators, about compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations, particularly concerning food labeling.

Addressing the gathering, Designated Officer for Food Safety, Samuel Zehol, emphasized the role of Village Councils in reporting food safety violations, such as cases of food poisoning or other complaints. He urged the councils and the general public to be alert to the sale of expired, misbranded, or adulterated food products, as well as the use of harmful chemicals in the market.

"Food safety is a shared responsibility," Zehol said, highlighting the importance of vigilance among both business operators and consumers.

Chairman of the programme, Pelezoto Kuotsu, also called on food business operators (FBOs) within the area to adhere strictly to FSSAI guidelines. He warned against the sale of misbranded or substandard products, urging compliance with all food safety norms.

The event also included a live demonstration on identifying common food adulterants, conducted by Zuthungbemo Ngullie, Food Technician with the Food Safety on Wheels unit from Dimapur Zone.
