VG barrack and jubilee monolith unveiled

Helipong Village Guards (VGs) celebrated its silver jubilee under the theme ‘For peace we protect and we commit our lives for people’ at Helipong Baptist Church, Helipong village in Tuensang on February 26.
Chief guest P Bashang Chang, Class-A Contractor dedicated and unveiled the newly constructed VG barrack and jubilee monolith. Congratulating on the milestone achieved, Bashang encouraged them to have a good relationship with the village council and elders under the banner of the government.
“From what I have heard, the newly constructed VG barrack was completed with the few amount collected from the salaries of the 20 VGs. Although you get less salary you have achieved a joyous task. This shows your character and unity. Therefore, carry on this attitude for the coming days to achieve bigger accomplishments and this in turn will bring blessings to your village community,” he added.
He further reminded the village community the importance of the VGs in villages and encouraged them to extend a helping hand or appreciation towards them for their service to their village.
L Chollen, Citizen President and the 1st Post Commander of Helipong VG narrated the history of the VGs in the village.
“I was a GB when we were first recruited on 26th February 1996 and since at that time I was the youngest among the 15 VGs and also could speak other common local dialects, I was appointed as the Post Commander. During my service as the Post Commander among the first 15 VGs, 5 of them have passed away and 5 GBs who requested for VGs in our village have also passed away. Only few of us are remaining and I am lucky to be alive till now to share you all this story,” Chollen said.
Lemba, Pastor Helipong Baptist Lashong (HBL) delivered the word of God while a short speech was delivered by representative from the village council.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Sangmei Tola, Associate Pastor Youth, HBL while Bible reading and prayer was conducted by H Yanola, Associate Pastor Women, HBL. Welcome address was delivered by Yanchu, VG Post Commander Helipong village and a special song was also performed by Helipong CTS unit.
