Dimapur, January 2 (MExN): Minister of Forest M.C. Konyak made a three-day tour of Peren Forest Division from December 29 to 31, 2010.
In a press note issued divisional forest officer, Peren, Samuel Changkija stated: “In spite of his heavy schedule Shri. Konyak made it possible to visit Jalukie, Peren, Tening and Ntuma up to the Reserved Forest bordering Manipur. During the Tour the Minister interacted with the Villagers and pointed out that Peren District has rich Biodiversity and it has to be conserved. He appealed to the Village Authorities and the Church Leaders to create awareness among the villagers and also co-operate with the Forest Department in preserving the Forests and Wildlife. Meeting a group of leaders from the Church and Village Council including some GB’s at Tening, the Minister informed that the only solution to the ecological problems like Global warming and climate change is conservation and sustainable management of our forests.”
The note also added that the minister gave instructions to the officers and staff of Peren Forest Division for carrying out the ongoing Hornbill Conservation efforts in Peren district; he stressed the need of entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with the villages for not damaging the forests.
The minister also appreciated the ban on hunting in Peren district being seriously observed. He also directed the staff that more patrolling should be taken up to prevent activities detrimental to the fragile ecological balance and people responsible for forest fire should be punished,” the note said.
