With an aim to encourage entrepreneurs and investors to set up business in Chumukedima, the proposed new district headquarter of Dimapur district, public leaders and citizens of Chumukedima town and Chumukedima village have mooted a “Free enterprise” concept.

The concept is with an objective to strictly monitor unnecessary harassment faced by shops and business establishments including random “taxation/collection” imposed by various underground groups and vested elements. This will facilitate entrepreneurs and businessmen to conduct their respective trade and business in relative peace and in turn provide better services to customers.

Disclosing this to the Morung Express, former chief advisor of Chumukedima Town Council (CTC), T Shuya, said the “free enterprise” concept has been mooted with consent of police, administration and citizens of Chumukedima.

CTC and Chumukedima Village Council will be strictly monitoring payment of taxes and fees by shops and business establishments so that business houses and shops do not pay extra taxes or fees apart from the mandatory trade license fee, sanitation tax and market regulation fee.

With regard to taxes imposed by “underground” groups, the GBs, Village Council in consultation with CTC will also be monitoring “Underground” taxes like “Army ration tax, house tax or tenancy tax.”

“Besides these common Underground taxes, we have decided not to entertain any kind of open taxation and demands by Underground groups on shops through receipts or whatsoever,” Shuya said.

He also said that the “free enterprise” concept is done to encourage local entrepreneurs and unemployed youths to take up various business activities as means to earn their livelihood.

Mention may be made that random “taxation” and “collection” by “Underground” groups and vested elements on shops and business establishments have proved to be the main deterrence to many unemployed local youths to take up business activities, who otherwise would have contributed to the overall Naga economy.
